A day in the life
It’s pretty chill here. As long as you meet your deadlines, you’re free to do what you want, as you want. Take a stroll along the beach adjacent to the sleepy town of Hua Thanon, a predominantly Muslim community with the only mosque on the island. Or check out the waterfalls and mummified monk around the corner (that’s not a typo). This island is your home for the next one to three months, so relax, concentrate on building your skills as a writer and coming away with a diverse portfolio and a great network of contacts and friends. The Content Castle is not about rules, but it is about bringing a creative community together in a paradisiacal island to meet, greet and have fun. So gather round, grab a beverage of choice and set to work on Project You.
Dependent on what you define as the morning, early risers can enjoy a traditional Thai breakfast from the lovely little lady perched on a stool to the left, just outside The Content Castle’s gates. She has a selection of grilled meats and sweet, sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves (eco-conscious and all that), but be warned, a truckload of school kids love them too, and she’s normally sold out by 8 a.m. Other breakfast options include the Ancient Noodle lady (the shop, not the lady) who also happens to sell delectable Thai milk tea and iced coffee. If you prefer the home comforts of cereals and toast, stock up on groceries from Tesco Express or the local 7/11 two minutes down the road, where you’ll find grilled cheese, sweet croissants and warm buns filled with an array of new delights.
Fuelled for the day, choose a nook in The Castle to start working on your masterpieces. Are you a traditionalist who prefers a wooden table and chair? An islander who sways on a hammock? Perhaps you’re a private bedroom writer. Whatever the case, The Castle has you covered.
Personally — much like the world’s greatest writers, might I add — I like to get all my assignments planned before lunch at 11 a.m., and written by 2 p.m., so I can then enjoy the rest of my day lazing at prestigious beach clubs and local beaches. I recommend Nikki Beach Club for the best coconut you will ever taste with unobstructed views of the sea. Another great option is Crystal Bay where you can lounge on the sand and tickle your toes in the salty water. Take a book from the Best Ever Book’s Collection at The Castle, or plug in your earphones to recharge before your next assignment. Mina, our wonderful housekeeper, always prepares a fabulous lunch, be it traditional Filipino adobo or a spicy glass noodle salad. She loves mixing it up and trying new things just as much as the next person, so feel free to send her recipes to try. If you’re more of an active person, kick some ass and try a Muay Thai class at The Place just a five-minute walk down the road, where Castle residents receive a 15 percent discount on food and drinks.
Hey, this is up to you. Most evenings I binge on Netflix with salty anchovies and sweet peanuts (don’t judge me; they’re fabulous), but the island has so much more to offer. Glamorous ladyboy Cabaret shows are a nightly event — most with free entry and a drink-buying policy — and a must-see for Thailand. Chaweng has an amazing nightlife full of Bob Marley devotional bars, professional Muay Thai stadiums, Central Festival for your shopping habits and a cinema for keeping up with the latest blockbusters. Head down to Lamai night market on a Sunday for an array of Thai treats and souvenirs, or the one on Wednesday underneath the watchful eye of Guan Yu, a one-minute walk from The Castle. Challenge your housemates to a game of Scrabble (you’re a bunch of writers, after all), or relax on the upstairs bamboo hammocks to the sound of the island’s inner jungle. And when the day is done, snuggle into your own bed among fluffy pillows and sheets until another day, when the sun will graze the silk organza curtains, and you’ll have another successful assignment under your belt.
Throughout your time here at The Content Castle, stories unfold, otherworldly corners are discovered, and you will grow as an intrepid explorer through your writing and on the beautiful island of Koh Samui. This is a day in my life at The Content Castle, what will a day in yours be like?
