Many writers are intimidated by the thought of putting pen to paper. Whether it is a blog post, an article or a simple write-up, one of the biggest factors that can contribute to  writer’s block is not having a topic to write about. Especially if you are newbie writer, coming up with a good topic can be harder than you think it is.

Once you have found a topic that interests you, writing about it can flow more readily and it will be easier for you to compose a successful piece. Here are five strategies on how you can come up with a good topic to write about.

Identify Your Audience

The first step to writing is to know who your audience is. Knowing who will read your piece can help determine the topic that you can choose to write about.

Ask yourself what the audience would be interested in. If you are unsure of what kind of audience you will have, create a fictional reader in your mind. Think about the things that might surprise or shock your audience.

Know What Can Interest You

Writing about something that is interesting to you can help the writing flow more easily and can help you generate a fresher content.

Try and free-write about something during your down time. Pick a topic or event that is interesting to you like: getting lost in a desert, or acquiring an illness. Free write about the situation. Think about what might happen next and the conversation that you might have later.

Write nonstop for a predetermined amount of time five to 10 minutes. Do not stop writing–even if it’s gibberish. You can get useful thoughts and ideas through free-writing. Random thoughts and ideas can inspire you later on down the line. They don’t need to make sense right away. Imagine you are explaining a situation to a foreigner who has no idea what is going on.

Look Around You

Your environment contains a rich array of things that can serve as your writing topic. Just look around and write about something that you can see.

Close your eyes then open them and write about the first thing that you can see, regardless of what it is. Look at the colour of the object you spot nearby and write a list of other things that have the same colour, until you are fully inspired. You may also try and remember the last time you saw the similar item. What were you doing before? Who were you with?

If you regularly read other people’s blog, chances are, you will feel inspired by reading them and you have ideas about what you can write about. You can also use them as references but make sure to link the blog that inspires you to write the idea and credit the details you got from them.

By looking at the things around you, you can come up with a topic that you can write about by reading other people’s blogs or using things around you as inspiration.

Keep an Idea List

Keep a list of the things that you can write about like inspirational quotes, funny things you saw on the street, etc. If you think of an idea, write it down. Go back to the list any time you feel like you need help in coming up with a topic or sit down at a specific time and reflect on ways to craft these ideas into stories.

Finding a good topic to write about can be very tricky, especially if it’s your first time coming up with your own topic to write about. Picking the right topic can save you time and can help set up the article for success before you even begin.
